The Dangers of Fleas and Ticks

Person with dog

If there are two things that can turn a fun day in the yard into a bad one, it’s fleas and ticks. Every pet parent knows they can be annoying, but it’s easy to forget how harmful these little pests can be.

3 Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe From Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks have been known to cause skin irritation, lead to Lyme disease, and even infest your house if they go undetected for long enough. Fleas and ticks may be small, but they consume a lot for their body size, and smaller animals such as puppies, kittens, and rabbits can face life-threatening loss of blood if not treated in a timely manner.

1. Talk to Your Vet

Finding the right flea medication is essential to protect your pet during their outdoor adventures. Over-the-counter medications and solutions such as ointments, collars, and shampoo are available, but they won’t work as well as prescription medication will. Talk to your vet to decide what kind of solution is right for you and your pet.

2. Check Their Skin Regularly

If you take your pet outside often — whether for a quick trip to the bathroom in your own backyard or on a hike — checking their fur for fleas and ticks will help you catch problems early and prevent the problem from turning into an infestation. Run your fingers or a flea comb through their fur when they come in from outdoors. If you do find a flea or tick, remove it as best you can and monitor your pet over the next few days to see how they act.

Note: Tick removal can be tricky and, if removed incorrectly, can lead to tick paralysis. If you’re worried about removing them yourself, call your vet.

3. Protect Your Home

Adult fleas will lay all of their eggs (up to 50 per day) on your pet. However, the eggs soon fall off the animal into carpeting, beneath the cushions of furniture, and wherever else the pet rests, sleeps, or spends most of its time. This is where homeowners should focus their control measures.
