3 Ways To Keep Your Stocking Pest-Free This Holiday Season

The holidays are here, and there’s no better time of the year for family gatherings. Just make sure you don’t invite everyone over this season.

Do I Need Pest Control Services in Winter?

Some may think that the cold weather means there will be fewer pests around the house to contend with. After all, we see fewer bugs outside. The unfortunate reality is that not only do pests stick around through the winter months, but you may actually see more bugs and rodents in and around your home.

3 Common Overwintering Pests

Some pests — such as certain species of mosquitoes — will die out in cold weather. But others will simply seek food, water, and shelter from the cold weather. Some pests that could make your home theirs this winter include:

  1. Rats and mice. Rodents can enter your home through the smallest gap or crack in search of food and water. Clean up crumbs and seal holiday dinner leftovers in airtight containers to reduce their options.
  2. Spiders. You may find spiders inside and around your home, garage, attic, or outdoor shed this winter. Spiders eat other insects, and since pests are hiding out for the winter in warm places, spiders will follow. Be cautious opening boxes pulled from storage as you prepare for the holidays — many spiders like to hide in dark, secluded areas.
  3. Cockroaches. Cockroaches can often be found in areas with excess moisture. This can be around a leak, a humid bathroom, or even an overwatered plant (such as your Christmas tree)! Fix leaks upon discovering them to help reduce the chances of an infestation.

Let’s review: Sealing gaps and cracks leading into and out of your home, cleaning up crumbs and storing food correctly, and preventing excess moisture in your home are all essential ways to keep your home safe from pests this winter. If you think you do have an infestation, contact the professionals at Modern Exterminating Co Inc online or by phone. (803) 205-2744
